Massimiliano Di Ventra received his bachelor’s degree in physics summa cum laude from the University of Trieste (Italy) in 1991 and completed his doctoral studies at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Switzerland) from 1993 to 1997.
Before joining the Physics Department at Virginia Tech in 2000 as an Assistant Professor, he worked as a Visiting Scientist at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center and as a Research Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University.
In 2003, he was promoted to Associate Professor, and in 2004 he transferred to the University of California, San Diego’s Physics Department, where he was appointed to Full Professor in 2006.

Di Ventra’s research interests include non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, DNA sequencing/polymer dynamics in nanopores, and memory effects in nanostructures for applications in unconventional computing and biophysics.
He’s given more than 300 speeches on these issues around the world (including 15 plenary/keynote talks, 10 talks at the American Physical Society’s March Meeting, 5 talks at the Materials Research Society, 2 talks at the American Chemical Society, and 2 talks at the SPIE).
He has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals (he was named a 2018 Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher), has 6 granted patents (2 foreign), co-edited the undergraduate textbook Introduction to Nanoscale Science and Technology (Springer, 2004), is the sole author of the graduate textbook Electrical Transport in Nanoscale Systems (Cambridge University Press, 2008), and the trade book The Scientific Method: Reflections from a Practitioner (Cambridge University Press, 2008). (Oxford University Press, 2022).
Di Ventra has taught at the Technion (2017), Technical University of Dresden (2015), University of Paris-Sud (2015), Technical University of Denmark (2014), Ben-Gurion University (2013), Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (2012, 2011), and SISSA, Trieste (2012).
He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Feynman Prize for Nanotechnology Theory, IEEE Nanotechnology Council Distinguished Lecturer, NSF Early CAREER Award, Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, fellowships in the Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society, and the IEEE, and election as a foreign member of the Academia Europaea. MemComputing, Inc. was co-founded by him.
